Rocky Mountain Klee Kai

The typical description of the Alaskan Klee Kai dog goes something like this: “The Alaskan Klee Kai is a smaller version of the Alaskan Husky, it is generally a “Spitz” type dog, and it physically resembles the Siberian Husky...” and so forth.  We have traveled to Alaska and enjoyed being spectators at the Iditarod.  We have also raised Siberian Huskies for many years and won AKC Champion titles in the show ring.  Additionally, we know the wonderful strengths of both the Alaskan Husky (used more often in major dog sled races for its speed and endurance) and the Siberian Husky (also strong and fast but far more photogenic).  The fact is that a description of the marvelous Alaskan Klee Kai breed is a great idea and necessary in order to give the reader or person investigating the breed a point of reference, but no current comparative description really does the Alaskan Klee Kai justice or places it in a precise or accurate category.  These puppies are amazing!

This breed is now an established breed all by itself and has proven itself to thrive in a wide range of latitudes and climates.  Although it is not a Working Class dog per se like many of its ancestors (it is too small to pull traditional sled loads across hundreds of miles), it is now competing in weight pulling competitions and pound for pound is quite impressive.  It also brings the look of a northern breed dog in a size that fits in most modern living situations.  The Alaskan Klee Kai is a beautiful, intelligent and loving companion and is both athletic and playful.  It is a watch dog, a show off, and a perfect fit for many homes.  Unlike the breeds it is often compared to, the Alaskan Klee Kai has far less of the “call of the wild” and has proven itself very trainable and obedient.
